Position Summary

Primary responsibility is providing support for the application of routine molecular marker (DNA and isozyme) and ploidy testing for the quality assurance (genetic purity) and breeder support (marker-assisted selection) programs. This position is based in the Genetic Purity lab, but provides routine support for all activities in both labs as assigned.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Apply routine molecular marker testing, including collecting and preparing seed (planting) and plant tissue, extracting DNA, setting up and running isozyme and PCR marker tests, and assisting in the evaluation of results.
  • Responsible for general lab upkeep. Prepare chemical stock solutions, assist in the handling of hazardous waste, maintain lab cleanliness.
  • Perform routine ploidy tests using flow cytometry.
  • Assist in entering data on computer regarding incoming samples and results.
  • Assist in genetic purity research (including new variety protocol development and improving or changing existing procedures).
  • Help with technical supervision of trainees, temporary employees, and others in the lab as delegated by lab coordinator.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Employment-related laboratory experience preferred.
  • Experience with molecular marker or similar tests preferred.

Knowledge / Skills Required

  • Good manual dexterity, visual & auditory discrimination, spatial perception, and mathematical & mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to learn the appropriate technical and semi-technical skills, including the operation of laboratory equipment.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of chemistry principles and techniques.
  • Ability to interact cooperatively and constructively with supervisors, lab personnel, and other staff members.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work.

Desired Skills

  • Must be able to work with hazardous laboratory chemicals and other possible irritating substances.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment when necessary and/or required. (Protective gloves, safety glasses & lab coat 60-80% of the time, respirator 15% of the time).
  • Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time.


  • B.S. or Associate degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related field preferred; or two or more years of relevant lab work experience.
