Position Summary

Coordinate and perform routine molecular marker tests for breeder support (marker-assisted selection [MAS]). Supervise assistants and coordinate the flow of information relating to project logistics and test data results. Participate in new marker discovery and research projects as required. Responsible for protocol development/improvement and lab upkeep/maintenance.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the MAS lab activities, including working with breeders to schedule projects and managing deadlines.
  • Apply standard procedures for molecular marker analysis; i.e., collect tissue samples from the greenhouse and field, perform nucleic acid isolations from plant tissues, prepare DNA for analysis, run PCR [polymerase chain reaction] or other molecular marker assays, and analyze results.
  • Prepare, organize, and interpret data and present results in the appropriate format.
  • Supervise and train technicians, trainees, visiting scientists, other Sakata personnel, and temporary help.
  • Refine, develop, and implement new and improved protocols related to routine DNA marker screening and certain research applications. Document and maintain lab protocols, primers/probes, and stocks of controls.
  • Be responsible for lab upkeep, including general cleanliness, preparation of solutions, ordering supplies, and equipment maintenance.
  • Travel as required to maintain and enhance lab skills and share technology with Sakata companies.

Experience

  • Two years of relevant post-undergraduate commercial or academic lab work, including significant practical experience in and knowledge of molecular marker analysis and project management.

Knowledge / Skills Required

  • Basic knowledge of molecular marker analysis, classical genetics, molecular genetics, and plant science.
  • Ability to coordinate and carry out projects with minimal daily supervision.
  • Ability to perform routine lab procedures with precision and attention to detail.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • General ability to refine, adapt, troubleshoot, and document lab protocols.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to interact professionally with Sakata's internal lab clients.
  • Computer and data management proficiency.
  • Good manual dexterity and visual acuity.

Education

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in biology, biotechnology, genetics, or closely related field.
